The first approved Post Test Trainer in Staffordshire offering Rider Assessments as part of the DSA Enhanced Rider Scheme ( ERS )

Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS)

The DSA (Driving Standards Agency) have launched a new training scheme for bikers which has been designed by the Agency and the motorcycle industry as a road safety initiative aimed at saving lives.

Figures show that motorcyclists are by far the most vulnerable of all road users. In Britain alone the death and serious injury rate is sixteen times higher if you ride a bike than if you drive a car.

Jim Fitzpatrick said: “The Enhanced Rider Scheme is aimed at improve ing the road safety skills of the bike and scooter riders already on the roads. We want to help qualified riders stay safe and reduce accidents at the same time.”

The new scheme offers bikers a ‘riders' health check' by qualified assessors across Britain. These assessors are on the Register of Post-Test Motorcycle Trainers, which was set up as part of the Government's Motorcycling Strategy. They will follow a new training package intended to benefit all bike riders who have a full motorcycle licence, regardless of the size of the bike and the experience of the rider.

Enhanced Rider Insurance Certificate (ERIC).

In November 2007, the DSA officially launched the Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS). Any rider who shows the required level of competency on training delivered by an RPMT will receive an Enhanced Rider Insurance Certificate (ERIC). They can present this certificate to major insurers to be in line for possible discounts.. Further, they will also be eligible for contined discounts by receiving additional developmental training in future years. This applies to ALL riders taking RPMT training such as new riders, experienced riders and those returning to riding after a break

A number of the leading motorcycle insurers have signed up to this scheme and are prepared to offer substantial discounts to riders who can show they can ride to the ERS standard.

The insurers sponsoring the scheme are: AA Ins, Bennett's Ins, Bikesure, Carole Nash, Chandler Direct, CIA Ins, Devitt, E Bike, MCE Ins, Motorcycle Direct, Norwich Union Direct and Lexham.

The Enhanced Rider Bonus is supported by the following underwriters: AIG, AXA, Chaucer Ins, Equity Red Star, Groupama, Hastings Direct, Highway, KGM, Link/ Zenith, NIG, Norwich Union and Royal & Sun Alliance .
